  1. I converted a VHS tape to DVD on a Sony VHS-DVD convertor. The DVD format is DVD-RW.
My DVD player plays DVD-RW formats but it simply refuses to play this converted DVD!
The error mesage on the DVD player says: "Cannot
It does not play in Windows Media Player/Cnter and only playes in the laptop using HP Quick player.
It’s a VOR file, so perhaps this is the problem? should it be converted to another, "friendlier" format, perhaps to AVI or MPEG?
It has been finalized already and still does not play in my DVD player. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as this a rare family video...

Did you finalize the DVD-RW? If it plays on your VHS-DVD recorder but not on a different player it might not be finalized.

The ONLY brand of DVD+/-RW that is reliable in the USA is Verbatim. EVERYTHING else is garbage. Some players are very fussy about brands. Stick with Verbatim for your DVD-/+RW needs.

  3. Hi,
Thank you for your quick reply.
    I used Memerex brand DVD-RW.

Yes, as mentioned it has been finalized on the converter and it shows as Finalized when I check its settings on the Sony DVD converter.
It plays on the HP quick player on my laptop with no problems but not in Windows Media Player and not on the DVD (Panasonic) player.
You don’t think it has anything to do with the fact that it's a VOR file? Is there a difference between video files and movie files? should it be converted? I'm, so confused...
