It seems to depend on what language (or writing system) you start from. I found that NotePad could easily convert the special characters in French, Spanish and German from ANSI into Unicode: just load the ANSI and then save to Unicode. However this did not work when I started with with Cyrillic in 1251 (Windows) code page, but I was able to find an online converter here: http://badaa.mngl.net/convert/con2uni.htm . I haven't tried Devanagari (Hindi or Nepali) yet. I don't know Arabic, Chinese, Japanese or Korean so I'm no help there.

  5. IMHO Subtitle workshop is spotty when it comes to Unicode support
even the musical signs are discarded when you edit the subs in subtitle workshop
i usually replace them with #
then i just let subtitlledit fix those back

Just use an ACTUAL text editor, such as EditPlus, TextPad, EmEditor, whatever — problem solved.

    Also, congratulations for the grave-digging
