I'm looking for a good, durable region-free DVD player to purchase for US use--any recommendations?
Any good web-site reviews?
Preferably not over $300; doesn't have to be Blu-Ray....
Thanks for any feedback!

If you want BluRay (I know you said you didn't necessarily need it) both Momitsu and Oppo make players that can be made region free for BluRay and DVD playback in the USA. All Momitsu sellers that I know of have already hardware hacked the model to support region free playback. Most Oppo sellers have also done the hardware mod for you, but do check as a few sellers expect you to do this on your own. The seller should state whether they have done the hardware hack or not.

There aren't many DVD only players left in the USA and Canada that can be made region free any more. MJA's suggestion is probably as good as any. I think there is one more Philips model that can be made region and I've heard that a few Pioneer models still can be as well but I don't remember the model numbers. If you don't get any more posts with specific models do a search here in the forums on the subject and it should turn up some hits. Please note that anything made by any company I have not named in this post may not make any models in the USA and Canada that can be made region free. Other companies have a few players that can be made region free but they don't sell those models in North America or the ones they sell don't have the same hardware and can't be made region free.

The word durable and modern electronics are not guaranteed to go together, but I have had a Philips for 5 years.

My suggestion, ensure there is plenty of ventilation, as I am convinced heat contributes to early death.

The Pioneer range , eg: 420 V do the best job I have seen, and will play region free pal dvd's on a NTSC TV, if you want to learn how to apply the hack, then here it is.

The $50 -$80 Seiki BD660 would have fit the bill other than the durability part but when they were on sale a couple weeks ago at Wal-Mart Canada you could have bought two. With the new FW this is becoming a good problem solver for me other than the no streaming "problem" which I don't have a use for myself. Region free for DVD and Blu Ray and now plays files from NTFS formatted drives means I can go looking for one of those 2TB HDDs come Boxing Day...

Ah...but the person who wanted one was in the USA. Pity that...

Is this unit available at all in the USA, or, can it be ordered in Canada from the USA?
