  1. I wish to attach subtitles to my .mkv file and watch it on WMP. I downloaded the .srt file and installed the DirectVobSub codec. I copied the .srt file into the same folder as the .mkv file then re-named the .srt file so it was identical to the .mkv file (except the .srt file extension). I opened the folder with WMP and set the subtitles to on (if available) - the sound and vision are absolutely fine, but there's no subtitles!

    What am I doing wrong?

  2. When I try to open the SRT file itself (it's a zipped file), Windows tells me that it doesn't have a program associated with it and I should create an association. Then it says Windows cannot complete the extraction - the destination file could not be created. When I go into Control Panel, the .srt file extension is not listed. Is this what's preventing the subtitles appearing? How do I create an association?

Sounds to me like your srt file is in a zip file. You will need an unzip program like 7zip to extract the srt file that is inside.

  4. Thanks marioval. I installed 7zip, extracted the srt file and saved it into the same folder as the mkv file, with the same name... but it's still not working. When I double click on the srt file itself I still get the same windows error message saying I need to create an association... and the .srt file extension still isn't showing in the control panel.

On your SRT file do the right-click, go to Open with... and choose WordPad.
