I have used AVI_IO, Virtualdub, iuVCR and almost every other program out there for capturing video. I have moved to Win2K recently so I have to give up the better AVI_IO and move to a Directshow/WDM capture app.
Well, iuVCR seemed to be the only one available. But its very buggy and its code for syncronizing audio/video doesn't work well if you want to convert to MPEG later.
So I found Showshifter. While this was made to be TV/VCR HTPC kind of application, I found it works GREAT for capturing video. It saves the files in its proprietary format, but can be converted to AVI later. If you're on NTFS, it can be one big AVI file too.
In its proprietary format, lets say in the course of a 1 hour capture, it splits each capture into multiple files (ala AVI_IO) at the 650MB mark. It is my belief that the audio & video syncronize upon each new file, so you don't even notice at the boundaries if (and I mean IF) there were any A/V sync problems.
I need to test more, but I thought I'd throw it out. So far, so good.
