I just bought the LG 42LD550 which plays movies via USB connection. Now the movies are original copies which are in 480p, anyone know if the TV upscales the movie to 720p? As I'm watching the movie it looks better than 480p but I can't be sure.

Actually, the 42LD550 is a 1080p display, so it will upscale to 1080p.
Flat panel displays (plasma, LCD) are typically fixed-pixel displays - they have only one display resolution. Therefore any input not already at the display's resolution will have to be upscaled.
