Hi All,
I just noticed that the videos I capture from VHS use the Canopus ADVC 110, has a color space of YUV when using MediaInfo.
When I open the video in virtual dub, I don't see this color space available when I try to save using Lagarith, or Huffyuv. What is the best colorspace should I use when saving a video with YUV? RGB or YUY2 or something else?
Thanks.
Matt

To open DV format video in Virtualdub, you will need a DV codec (recommend Cedocida ).

Most Virtualdub filters use RGB space. There are two types of RGB conversions 0-255 and 16-235. Pro edit programs maintain DV's 16-235 levels through filtering. Most Virtualdub filters require 0-255 conversion. Note that this this will clip off luma values above 235. This can be a problem especially with camcorder sources which often have significant excursions into 236-255.
You can set the Cedocida DV codec to either RGB level values, YUY2 or YV12. Other codecs like the Panasonic DV codec force a conversion to 0-255 RGB.

If you're not doing any filtering in VirtualDub you can set Cedocida to output YUY2, use fast recompress mode in VirtualDub, and set HuffYUV or Lagarith to work in YUY2 mode. That way there will be no RGB conversion anywhere along the line. Note that VirtualDub may complain about the video not being RGB and you may not be able to preview it.
Don't use Panasonic DV codec -- it only outputs RGB. I think Windows' DV decoder also outputs RGB.
