  1. Can someone tell me or direct me to the steps to F-Disk or re-format the C: drive ? I have a computer that I want to re-work the C: drive and I have the legal Windows XP Home CD. I was told when I bought the Windows XP Home CD that I could install and register it two times or should I even register it.

Plus, I had a guy that knows about building computers that told me that I shouldn't up date Service Pack 3..... in other words turn off my Windows Update. Was that the right thing to do ?

    Thanks up front,

    Tommy

You can do that using the XP install CD.

Not sure what you're asking. When you install most any OS, you have the option of repartitioning and reformatting the boot drive, which is what I would recommend. You don't need any other program. That's what a 'clean install' is.

If you reinstall XP, you may have to call MS to be able to activate it. Tell them your hard drive died and they will usually go for it.

As fas as installing SP3, that's up to you. SP3 is mostly security improvements. You can live without it if you like. Most all updates past SP3 are also security updates because MS is no longer updating XP, except for a few security updates.

If you install a good antivirus program, then maybe a firewall program you should be OK. I use Avast antivirus, Comodo firewall, SpyBot S&D, and Spyware Blaster. No problems with malware.
