W7 not recognizing camcorder.

I am trying to load DV tapes from a Canon Elura100 onto my computer via firewire and Windows 7 is not recognizing the camcorder. I have downloaded everything Canon USA says I need to make this work and the computer still doesn't recognize it. I even tried it on my old Dimension 4550 running Linux Mint 7 with no luck.
