Obviously the bitrate was set too low....just re-rip the DVD/Blu Ray and convert again.

You're joking right ? You've been a member here how long ?
Film grain. In fact, Hollywood often adds extra grain in post production. Let's not get into the subjective argument as to whether or not grain looks better - but just know it's often the director's decision to add it -

You've reached this conclusion based on a youtube trailer ?
I hope you realize youtube re-encodes everything at a low bitrate. Even if you wanted to keep grain, you couldn't.
Now I haven't seen the Inception blu-ray . Maybe it is grainy or maybe it isn't. Maybe something is exceptionally wrong with skorpinok's copy, or maybe it's just normal. -

Yeah, like it may be a download - not a rip.

It's likely that noise reduction and/or low bitrate have removed the grain from the YouTube version. Can you post a link to the YouTube trailer you're looking at?
Virtually all films have noise/film grain to some degree. I'd much rather have a DVD/Bluray disc with film grain, rather than have excessive noise reduction applied - which usually affects fine detail and textures.
I've got an Inception trailer that's ~9Mbit/s - and it has quite noticeable grain on a number of shots. -

I don't follow. classfour seems to be suggesting that the original video might be a poorly converted download rather than a bit-for-bit rip of the original DVD. In most cases a badly converted video will loose grain rather than add it.
The YouTube versions I've seen are a lower quality with visible macroblocking (set the resolution to 720p):

This higher bitrate version shows grain in some shots, particularly behind Michael Caine at 32 seconds (167MB download):

This might be explained by the different film formats used in the film (35mm anamorphic, 65mm and VistaVision) and possibly the use of higher speed (ISO) film stock for certain scenes. -
I tried with new DVD, also tried with other inception Dvd's the grain is present all over the film especially in dark scenes & low lightning conditions, also tried with stax rip using 2 pass encoding(x264 film medium), its all the same result just like handbrake ouput nothing change, i think this is christhoper nolans grainy inception, while his dark knight i encoded using same tools is fantastic..

Could you post an image from the DVD as an example of the grain?
Although I can see grain on some shots from the trailer, it's quite subtle. Applying noise reduction might actually reduce the quality by removing detail, so I personally wouldn't use it here.
Have you tried Bjs' suggestion (VirtualDub)? -

It depends on how much grain you have. If there's a lot of grain a "weak" noise reduction won't do much. "Strong" noise reduction will remove small details as well as noise. Heavy noise reduction will also lead to posterization artifacts.
Of course. Have you ever seen a movie in the theater? They're full of grain.Last edited by jagabo; 13th Dec 2010 at 21:12.
