Hey~ I'm new-ish to virtualdub but I never had this issue before. I recently reformatted my computer and had to re-download everything, including vdub. So I'm getting ready to encode a video with subtitles only to find that the file size of the output is going to be over 1GB. While the input video is only 700MB. Usually I have no problems with encoding. I just compress it with XVID, add the filters and I'm on my way. But not anymore!
I searched everywhere. I re-downloaded and downloaded codecs, download AC3 audio to make sure the audio is compressed ,etc. But nothing seems to work!

File size is entirely a function of the bitrate. Choose a codec; choose a bitrate. And make sure your original audio isn't being converted to WAV audio.

But I never had to manually choose the bitrate. I don't even know how to do that because I just used to encode it after those few steps. No matter what I do, the file size is always over 1GB

Don't choose a bitrate then. Choose a codec and then choose a quantizer at which to encode. What codec are you using (XviD, DivX, whatever)?

I generally use xVid. When I've encoded before, I just clicked xvid, did the filters and it encoded fine. But now when I select xvic the video comes out too big but everything else is fine.
I also have ffdshow. I tried to encode it with ffdshow too but then the video comes out too small, bad quality and oddly off center.I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

You set the bitrate in the XviD Configuration panel. If running 2 passes, you set it for the 2nd pass:

I changed the settings to your settings, it was on Single Pass but I don't remember what the Target Bitrate was but it was a big number. But when I previewed output, the file size was still projected to be over 1GB. IDK what else to do. Maybe retire from encoding. lol
