OK...Here we go. This is the first time in 20 years of computing I have failed to find the solution to a problem with an older thread of the same problem. I sure hope somebody has a fix for me.
Last August my brother and I shot a documentary film over a 10 day shoot. We compiled hundreds of .MOV files that we dumped directly onto an external drive, which by the way we used out of the box formatted so both Windows and MAC could read. After the file dump we used MPEG stream clip to convert all the ,MOV files to Apple Prores 422 (lt) for easy editing in Final Cut Pro. Everything seemed to work out great....except......a few of the files did not convert all the way and were left in a .mov file that would not preview or play. "the movie could not be opened....this is not a movie file" We kept shooting and decided to troubleshoot later. After some investigation I came to the conclusion that all the files were of the same file size 4.29GB, so I figured that MAC could not read the file over that size and all forums said it should work on Windows....didn't. Have read nothing anywhere on anybody having the same problems.

What is the file system of this "out of the box" external drive? There is a 4 GB size limit for FAT32 formatted drives. Drives in NTFS limit file sizes at 16 TB, so I don't think you'll run into that latter limit.

hiya
there is a service is for professional video makers, the program is called treasured- it will give you an idea if your file *can* be fixed
below is the youtube video demonstration by these guys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fMeHWgkqdg
it's a paid service but if the stuff is really important to you/ you can pass costs on to clients......
OR
http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/introducing_fcs_maintenance_pack.html
the "media salvage" bit might do what you need- you can download a trial and see if it works. it's $99 to buy
other than that if you are geeky like me then investigate adding the mdat data and moov atom into the file somehow
hints are

or
http://modmyi.com/forums/windows-specific-modding-discussion/587461-editing-mov-files-...-videos-3.html
these are not trivial things to do but if you are determined not to pay (or can not) the above places would be where i'd start.
i have never done this but as a video pro i thought i might need to one day so i looked in to it a while back.

Drive is formatted FAT32 out of box. Might be an issue, however, both my internal drives are formatted MAC OS and we copied to those first for conversion. I'll bet your right though, when we transfered those files over to the FAT32 is caused some error.
Thanks for responding case -
jamiep....thanks for the reply, i did find treasured and did get the file reader to identify video images on the files, so i do know they can be saved. Problem is i have 15 to 20 files with this problem and they are saying 159 per file, just not cost effective. I will give the links a try and see if I can pull off a advanced fix. never know....thanks again

did you try the FCS demo?
if it works that would be $99 for all of your files

let us know how it goes!

J....Thank you for the link. that is an unbelievable video toolkit, and FCP must have. the repair option did not work , but the salvage option worked great, took an hour for 5 files. Small price to pay for the capabilities of the package. Thanks again for the response.
