Moving the "Run" command

I have a PC with Win XP Pro that I'm setting up for my grandkids, and I'd like to know if there is a way to remove the "Run" item from the Start menu and put it (or a shortcut to "Run") somewhere else deeper in the menus?

Hit your "START" button, then drag the "RUN" to your desktop, you now have a shortcut.

Then right click on your "START" button and select "PROPERTIES", then select the "START MENU" tab, then click "Customize" then select the "Advanced" tab and you can scroll down the list and unselect "run command" and it will not be on the "START" menu anymore.

Now you can cut and paste the shortcut you dragged onto your desktop anywhere you want into your HDD folders or if you want it buried deeper into your "START" menu right click on the "START" button and select "open".
Put it anywhere you want.


But if you don't want them getting to it, just remove it, then if you need it you can always put it back through the properties of the "START" menu.

Or even know about the "run" command and know what "google" is!!

But i doubt his grand kids have a clue what the run command is or is for let alone that it exist's.

Probably more of a precautionary measure than anything else.

Because if most people can see it or find it on a pc by chance, they are driven to mess with it and mess everyting up!!!

Noahtuck: Thanks for your answer about how to make it a shortcut -- that will work perfectly for me. I knew I could remove the Run command from the Start menu, but I didn't think I could make a shortcut of it.

Yes -- definitely precautionary. Since the Run command would be right there every time they'd hit Start, I didn't want them getting curious about it and start messing around with it.

This gets me thinking of a bigger solution -- can't I set up a "limited" account for them and customize their Start menu by deleting the Run command (and other items) without messing up the main admin's account settings?

You old curmudgeon... What's the fun of having a PC if they don't get to mess around and mess things up so that they can then go back to fix it and learn something. Don't make them sheep, make them shepherds!
