I have some video's that I need to put on a DVD as data files. I am going to give them to somebody else to edit. I don't have Nero on my new PC and was wandering if IMGBurn can just burn a data file on a DVD or not. I'm new to this, sorry for the ignorance.
I started one using Windows media player and it shows it has 60 minutes remaining just moving the 3 gig file from my desktop, it hasn't even started writing yet (I don't think).

OK I got that figured out now I have another questions. I have some software that I can write with that came with my PC. My file size is under 4 gig but when I start to write it it goes over 4.8 and won't write. So I want to use imageburn but being a newbie (and an idiot) I am not sure which function to use. The four videos I want to put onto a DVD are .mts files. I have been trying read and comprehend the the tutorials on their website but not sure what I need to do. What function do I need to select when image burn opens? Write image files to disk??? Also I thought I was doing it write following the tutorial and it had me go to build and it ended up putting a .iso file on my desktop. Is this a necessary part of the process or was I doing the wrong thing. I also noticed while it was making the ISO file it said that the time remaining was 450 minutes. Does it take this long to make a DVD with this software.
Sorry for my ignorance but I just want an easy way to put these videos to a DVD that will play in a stand alone. I have edited them how I want and I made sure all the files were under 4 gig thinking I would have not problems with size. I don't want to have to re edit. -
Make sure you are in "EZ Picker" mode, which shows big rectangular mode buttons. Click on the one that says "Burn Files/Folders To Disc" on the top right. This avoids the whole ISO step and will burn directly to disc. It brings up a file selection box, whose icons are tiny and confusing. The top one selects individual files, the one beneath that looks like a tiny folder selects folders. After you select the files, OK everything and the disc should burn (you'll be asked to okay two or three times before it starts burning). It may suggest changing the file format of the DVD to suit the files you want to burn, if it does just OK it. It may also suggest a name for the disc, if you don't care you can OK it, if you want to change the name you can. The total burn time should be no more than 15 mins.
Before running IMGFburn, mouse over each of the four .mts files and check their size. You don't want the total to be more than 4.35GB, because more won't fit on a single DVD. If the total comes to the 4.8GB you saw earlier, you will need to make two DVDs or buy a dual-layer DVD+R disc to fit the files on one disc (if your burner can support DL blanks).
This was in reply to your original question on making data DVDs to back up the files. I'm not familiar with the handling of .mts files to make DVDs that will play in a standalone. I may be mistaken, but I believe .mts files are part of the AVCHD high-def standard: such discs only play on BluRay players, not ordinary DVD players. You may first need to convert the .mts files into standard-def VIDEO_TS format if you want the DVD to play as an ordinary DVD compatible everywhere. Others here can help direct you to that info. -
I was able to burn the data disk ok. I had used my software to burn a test dvd and the .mts files played fine. The problem is after I edited all my files and got them the way I wanted (they are all under 4 gig) I can't burn them because it shows the file size as too large. I am not sure if it is from the generic menu it puts in or what. Because while the file is in the Que screen it shows it is 3.9 gig. In the little status bar at the bottom of the screen it shows it is 4.8 gig. I looked in the PDF guide that came with the software and it does not show the max file size, it only states that the disk can't hold more then 4.3 gig. Anybody else have any advice on how to burn these .mts files to a playable dvd on Imgburn.
