  1. Hey everyone,

I have a question, I want to connect my PS2 to my VGA supporting monitor that has builtin speakers, for the audio I have one of these

But I'm not sure what to do for the video, most forum posts about the subject are people wanting to put their PC output to a TV not to use their monitors as a TV.

AFAIK VGA is analog and composite is analog, and I "should" be able to send analog signal down from the PS2 to an adapter which would then pump it into my monitor and display.

I am thinking of something like this

Would this work? and if so does anyone know somewhere that would sell this type of cable? I checked radio shack and couldn't find it on their website.

    Thanks!

No. A standard VGA connector has sepate red, green, blue, vertical sync, horizontal sync connections. Composite video only has one - everything goes down a single cable. S-Video has two (luma and chroma).

A composite>VGA adapter would need to convert the signal electronically.

It's possible to buy VGA adapters, but they won't work with all monitors. There can be compatibility issues with the horizontal line frequency, and possibly interlaced vs progressive problems - the PS2 normally outputs interlaced video whereas VGA is almost exclusively progressive.

Some VGA adapters aren't cheap either - £120/$188 (and even when they do work, the quality is often not great).

    What monitor do you have?

That's the monitor I have, with VGA-DVI-HDMI connectors

    **EDIT**

OK.... wow.... yea I actually haven't payed very much attention to the connectors, for some reason I though I had only those 3, apparently I have composite & component as well....

so yea thank you so much for your explanation though intracube, I didn't know I would have needed a special device for that.

    darc clan,

Here's the full explanation of why it's so hard/impossible to setup a PS2 with VGA output. I had no idea that most PS2 games were interlaced!

You also pick up a monitor that has component or composite in. Found this at Newegg:
