  1. Hello there,
I tried goin thru the forums here, but seems like the technical language is bit too much for me. I was tryin to get some cartoons downloaded from internet using Real player for my boy and burn it on to DVDs so that he could watch it on the new Panasonic blueray player i bought. The player said the disc is incompatible and i tried another free software, AVS video convertor on the internet to convert the files into different formats like .wmv, .mpg, and DVD formats..but still i'm unlucky in gettin the DVD ready for him. I'm both unsure which all formats are supported by my player and also how to make DVDs on the format supported by my player.
I hope someone can guide me throug this. Thank you..Rob.

What are you burning? Just the files?

If you're trying to create it as a dvd, then you'll need to author a DVD.

  4. Thnks , I'm tryin to burn the cartoon files downloaded from internet using Real player. Most of them are shown as 'flash video files'. my problem to be put simple is that i need to get it burned on a DVD and run on a Blue ray player.
@ Hech54, what are the informations i can provide u further as i'm not sure what are right informations here that i know.
@ Classfour, i'm burning the cartoon files and nothing else. And would u be able to explain what u mean by 'need to author a DVD'?

You can either convert the cartoons to video "files" to play in your player....but you need to know exactly what type of video files the player can play and from which medium(memory stick, external hard drive, internal CD, internal DVD) it can play them.
    OR
You need to convert the files to DVD Video(as opposed to the above simple data DVD).
Then there is also the exact origin of the cartoons. Are they American NTSC video format or are they foreign PAL video format.

  6. Thanks Heck54, those are video files which i can see on my computer as well as on my old dvd player when i burned it on a DVD. But then the same DVD wont run on my Blue ray player and i have understood that blue ray players do not support some video formats. I'm though not sure about which formats my Blueray player supports ( Panasonic SA BT 330) and how to convert my files to those formats. I had been tryin hard for the past two days and i hope u understand how silly i am when following the technical terms reg this.
If DVD video is a format which will be supported by the Blue ray player, how would i convert my files into DVD video ? I'm 'nero startsmart essentials' to burn the DVD and i also have 'windows DVD maker'. Will any of these two help me?

  7. The cartoons are those i have downloaded from youtube and when i checked it showed to be 'flash files'.

Add the flash files in dvd flick or convertxtodvd. Convert. Burn.

Your player also supports divx/xvid so you could also convert to it with for example the basic very divx converter. Burn or put on a usb memory stick.

  9. Thank You Baldrick, i'm trying that right now.

does your player have a usb port on it? if u have a thumb drive, maybe u can load that flash file onto the thumb drive, insert it into the player and if it will play the flash file direct

if not...you can use AVStoDVD and it accepts flash files for conversion to an acceptable/playable format...(i.e...dvd)..also accepts real media files

    5. depending on where u live u may wanna make sure you have set the right region playback for the dvd..i.e...NTSC or PAL..as you can see at the bottom of any one of these windows, mine says NTSC....if your not in the states then to change it to PAL, a button at the top called Preferences, click it, then click on a tab that says Video and click on the drop down box called Dvd video standard....set it to whatever you want

    6. click on start...not sure how long it will take so i would just let it run over nite or u could sit and watch it

  17. Despite all the many people who claim never to have a problem working with downloaded video files, I find them to be a huge pain. Nobody creating these files seems to follow any sort of standard, so half the time they will only play on the website you got them from. FLVs are sometimes easier, sometimes much worse than other types. The key issue with FLVs seems to be what video source they contain: if its NTSC ("American"). they convert easily to something playable on a DVD player, if they're PAL ("foreign") they tend to be a lost cause and won't be useful on anything but a computer. When the creator of such a file does it in NTSC, most conversion software and playback hardware can massage it into something playable. But if its done in PAL, everything goes haywire: conversion software crashes, or tells you after six hours processing it "can't find a soundtrack", or creates a DVD with audio lip-sync so far off that even a three year old gets a headache trying to watch it. I don't understand why PAL is such a problem, its actually the bigger TV standard used by more countries, but for some reason it causes file issues galore compared to NTSC, even if you keep the final converted version in PAL.

More and more lately I get files that won't play on one type of computer but will on another, or that will play in KMPlayer but not Windows Media Player, or that will play on a computer only as an audio file (no video). The only way out of this compatibility mess is to convert this stuff into a standard video DVD. Doing so requires a program that will take the files and "author" them into a regular DVD playable on standard DVD or BluRay gear. I have tried several such programs, including the AVStoDVD suggested by Moontrash (excellent tutorial, BTW, Moontrash!). Personally, I can't recommend AVStoDVD to the casual user or "newbie": I find its interface convoluted, and it has a tendency to override the settings you make to avoid problems you predict: you discover after hours of proicessing that the damn thing blew up because it used settings you explicitly told it not to use. Its also slow as molasses and you never know which of its encoders it will choose to create the DVD files: some work well, others are guaranteed to fail. I'm sure there are many here on VH who have mastered it, but its a very obstinate bit of software best left to the sophisticated user.

I've had better luck with DVDflick: it isn't nearly as complex as AVStoDVD, its much quicker to to understand and work with. You just open it up, add your files to a new project, and hit the "create DVD" button. You have the option to add a menu and other customization, but if you just want a DVD asap that will just play, its three simple steps. It takes about as much time to create a DVD as the total running time of the files you're converting. The only real drawback to DVDflick is its poor handling of audio lipsync: sometimes its perfect, a lot of times it isn't, usually if the source video file is (again) the dreaded PAL. In the long run I think its easier to just leave these damn files as computer files, and play them on a TV directly using a separate specialty media player like the Western Digital. There's too much variability in the files, too many compatibility issues, and it takes too much time to convert them to DVD: its often not worth the trouble of optimizing them for disc players. Especially for kids: todays five year old understands PC media files better than his/her parents anyway.

Please elaborate better, with examples, the situations you are describing. If anything can be made to make AVStoDVD more user friendly, let me know.

To avoid going OT, it would be better move here

Hello Mrc_ , This is what i could find. the type of file saved in the output file is shown as 'media file , .m2v '. Is that what u asked me to post? sorry for being up with silly basic knowledge reg this whole thing.

  20. I too agree with Orsetto that lot of these players have different types of format support system and not all..and there is a hell lot of file formats around. The best way would be to add a software to every player such that it converts any type of files into one format which the player would play..ha ha..!

There should be another file, a very small text file with extension "log". Just open it (i.e. with Notepad) and copy and past here all the content.

  27. It could be really a splitter/codec issue:

    1. Download and install flvsplitter (see Help/FAQ/Video/Q3.6)
    2. Download and install ffdshow (see Help/FAQ/Video/Q3.1)
    3. If you are using Windows7, then download and install Windows7 Preferred Filter Tweaker and select ffdshow for all (available) video and audio filters (see Help/FAQ/General/Q1.5)
    4. Run again your project

    Let me know

    Bye
