  1. I want to be able to take some DVD's and go through the process of ripping, etc to SVCD's. My problem is that I don't have a DVDROM drive in my computer. I have a APEX600a standalone DVD player w/S-video on it. Can I use this connection with a capture card to get the DVD on to my hard drive or do I have to buy a DVD drive? Anybody, help???

  2. If you capture DVD via S-Video then it's a video capture, not a DVD rip.

It does work but the quality won't be as good as DVD rip.
For your info, DVD-ROM are very cheap nowaday. I just got one 12X for 39.95$ (PowerDVD software included).

Unless you have a hardware capture card (which can capture MPEG directly), DVD rip is faster (about 12min for a 2 hour movie) than capture (2 hour capture time).
