I've downloaded some files from a file hosting site with the intent of converting them and burning them to DVDs. All the files are wmv, and they seem to play just fine on the computer. But when I try to convert them, the whole system freezes, and the only thing to do is hit the reset button. I've tried several of the files at random with the same result, so I assume at this point that they all have the same problem, whatever it is. I've tried both MainConcept and DVD Flick, with the same result for each.

Is this because of something specific to file hosting sites, or is it more likely that the files themselves were corrupted when uploaded? Or something else?

    Thanks.

My guess ? Overheating. If your computer specs are correct, it is an old beast. Chances are the CPU fan is clogged with dust or failed completely, or the motherboard has a lovely covering of insulating dust on it. A prolonged encoding session is causing everything to overheat, and the system is locking itself to protect itself.

Simple test. Take the side off the case and gently blow all the dust out - hold the CPU fan still while you do this. Now, aim a small desk fan into the case, and try encoding again. if you get through the full encode without locking up, you have your cause. Put a new cooling fan in and all will be well.
