  1. I'm attempting to create a backup of my DVD collection. I'm on a Mac and use MTR to rip the DVDs and Popcorn to compress/burn. Everything plays them fine, even on my XBox 360, but not on my Sony BDP-s370 which won't play anything back. Tried different media and burning speeds. Anyone have a clue what the issue is?

Verbatim (anything but the cheap Life series) and Taiyo Yuden are the only top notch media available in North America. Assuming you have not used those, have you tried burning at 2.4x?

  3. Thanks for the reply. I haven't tried either brand but I do know where I can pick up a verbatim so I'll try it. I tried 2x with no luck. The odd thing is that the player does not even try to read the disk, just says it's unplayable. One other thing I noticed is that MTR seems to remove all previews and the disk goes straight to play.

Modern DVD and BluRay players shouldn't care about +R vs. -R discs, but I suppose if you are going to buy Verbatim you could buy some DVD-R discs and see if that is any better. Remember, don't buy the "Life" series from Verbatim. I would ask if you are sure that you are closing the disc but I would not expect the Xbox to play a non-closed disc. If all this fails, can you try something other than Popcorn to burn with? I'm not a big fan of Macs, but I have successfully used BurnX.

  5. Could it be MTR that is causing the problem? I though at first it was the burning not finalizing too but it then it should not play on my other DVD players from various computers to portables and the XBox. I'll try a different ripper as well.

I just had a thought about this. What format exactly do you use Popcorn to create? I just assumed, probably incorrectly, that you were using Popcorn, whatever that is (I have no idea) to create DVDs. I bet you are creating something else like Divx and THAT is the real problem. You see Sony BluRay players are infamous for not supporting anything but DVD, BluRay, audio CDs and maybe MP3 and JPG. That's it. No MKV. No Divx or AVI.

  8. No, it's DVD. Popcorn is basically a stripped down Toast. XBox recognizes it as a DVD as do my other players.

  9. Problem sorted by returning the Sony and getting an LG. Same feature set and my backups play beautifully.
