I need to convert ass to ssa (or smi/srt/sub - any of those will work) for my portable video player. I tried using subtitle workshop, but when I choose "batch convert" it has a scroll down menu for the "default framerate". I am not sure what it means by "default", but I assume that it is asking what framerate my video runs at. It runs at 25.994156 according to VLC. The closest framerate to that is 25. By my calculations that would not work, because it would lose synchronization at nearly 1 frame per second. How can I convert my ass subs to one of the aforementioned subtitle formats?

  2. For SSA, in many cases you can just change the extension. Did you try that?

I would guess (not using Subtitle Workshop) that 'default' means the timings aren't to be changed. So, choose 'Default Framerate'. Just check the timestamps before and after to see if they've changed.

SSA/ASS subtitles are timed by the frame. SRT are timed in seconds. So to convert you need to specify the actual framerate of your video.

Load the subtitle and then if Subtitle Workshop can load the video ("Movie/Open") it will read the framerate from the video itself.
Then "save as" and choose "Subrip" (SRT).

You can play it in Subtitle Workshop to confirm sync.
