  1. Hi everyone.
I could play 720p and 1080p videos smoothly before formatting. I installed all the drivers contained on my motherboard CD and the drivers of my graphic card.
I noticed that if I stop the video for 5 seconds, then resume, the video plays flawlessly for about 5 seconds.
    These are my MPC settings:

I tried a lot of different combinations but none of them worked, always the same result. VLC can't play them smoothly either.
My computer specs are on my profile.

  2. Try using the internal source filters for the type of file you're playing. Also try different output devices, VMR-9 (renderless), for example. And you have to exit MPC and restart before the change takes effect.

I tried but nothing changes. I have to stop the video for X seconds to be able to play it smoothly for X seconds. Thanks anyway.

  4. Try updating to MPCHC? Are you sure your files are DXVA compatible? DXVA doesn't support all h.264 features.

Before formatting I played those files smoothly without DXVA support. By the way, even if I play other videos which are DXVA compatible, some of them lag as well, while others (only one right now, which is 1080p) play fine.
My version of MPC-HC is 6.5.0, it's the latest.

  6. MPC and MPCHC are not the same thing. MPCHC is a newer brach with more internal filters.

A Pentium D will probably have problems with 1080p50 and 1080p60. And those aren't DXVA compatible. 1080p30, 1080i30, 1080p24, 720p60 and below should be playable by the CPU, or DXVA as long as too many B frames and reference frames aren't used.

My version was the one which came with K-Lite Codec Pack. Anyway, I upgraded to MPC-HC, tried several combinations, but nothing's changed.
Did I have to install something related to my processor when I formatted my computer? Besides, the video I'm trying to play is 1080p25.

    Thanks for your time.

  8. The last time I did a clean install, I used a newer version of MPCHC than I had been using. Couldn't get it to use DXVA until I did the following:

Got to: ffdshow -> ffdshow video decoder configuration -> DirectShow control. Check the "Don't use ffdshow in" box. Edit -> Add. Find the mpc-hc.exe executable, I guess for you it's in K-lite somewhere. Okay, close the edit dialog. Apply, close the other dialog. See if that works for you. (The internal mpchc filters must be enabled, of course). Good luck.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

It didn't work but thanks for your help. The point is that I'm not even trying to get it to use DXVA, because I played them fine without DXVA before formatting, besides I have the same problem with most of the videos which are DXVA compatible. Maybe I just forgot to install some processor-related software/driver.

  10. What software decoder are you using for h.264 video? It needs to be multithreaded to get smooth playback of 1080p video. Use ffdshowmt (free) or CoreAVC Pro (not free). A single threaded h.264 decoder will not get you smooth playback. That's why VLC can't play the videos smoothly, its h.264 decdcer is single threaded.

I had already tried CoreAVC Pro without success. I tried ffdshowmt, left all the settings untouched and enabled all the ffdshow filters in the External Filters box in MPC-HC. Same old story.
I think I'm just going to format it again...

  12. The problem was that the videos I was trying to play were on an external HDD. This HDD is connected to my PC through USB, but I noticed that the transfer rate is a lot slower than before (about 1 MB/s). It's like my computer USB ports have been downgraded from 2.0 to 1.1 since the last formatting. I knew it wasn't a codec problem. Now I'm dealing with the real problem, just wanted you to know.
I just had to enable USB 2.0 support from BIOS to solve the problem.
