When in the Setup menu looking for the Finalize DVD info I got to a message that said something like " Do you want to upgrade?" - Not knowing what this was I moved the hi-lite to the right to "no" and pressed enter. The DVD drawer ejected and a message came on the screen "Please wait - upgrading" with a small blue mark below the message. I went to the manual and see nothing about this type of information (re: upgrading?).
I left it for about 15 minutes and nothing changed. I tried to power unit off or look for a reset switch/button but could find nothing. Remote control functions did not do anything either.
Finally I pulled the plug and left it for a few minutes. When I plugged it back in no lights come on; remote does not do anything, but it sounds like the unit is running.
What do I do now?

if it was actually updating the firmware for some reason and you turned the power off before it was done, it may well be a boat anchor now.

As I found out later on the web in order to update firmware I need to download upgrade from Daytek my computer, then burn it to a disc, then insert disc in recorder... I had no intention of doing this so without any disc firmware it should not have been trying to update anything.... but who knows. I have sent a message to Daytek support to see what they say.

Might have pooched the firmware rendering it useless. Never had that one happen before so i can't help. Usually you get the C language error which can't be fixed. Might be time to find a newer recorder anyway. Have found lots of good HDD ones at pawn shops, Craigslist, etc. very cheap now that most people seem to be going the PVR route. I think I'm up to 12 hand me downs now.

As uour Daytek may be a clone of a liteon unit . Did you or anyone else attempt an HDD upgrade 400 gb -
Dayteks are not Liteon clones. They use completely different chips (Cirrus Logic) but are easily upgradeable using regular 5400 rpm IDE hard drives. I don't think the power supply will take drives larger than 400 Gig without problems but many people have done simple upgrades since the units will just recognize a new drive when you put one in and format it for you. You can even swap them out between units without having to worry that the machine will erase the content you have on the drive. A very nice feature that.
