  1. Hi

I'm having some problems rendering a clip in after effects.
I need to export it to M2V, so I can use it in Encore DVD.

My result is quite blurry, here are my settings.

    MPEG2-DVD
    quality: 5
    25 fps
    field order: none
    16:9 format
    VBR 1-pass
    minimum bitrate: 6
    target bitrate: 8
    maximum bitrate: 8
m-frames: 3 (what is that for)
n-frames: 12 (what is that for)

thanks in advance for some help

  2. what kind of composition? is it complex, with lots of animation, explosions that sort of thing? It may be that you are exceeding the capacity of DVD MPEG2 compression for quality. You could improve a few things:

    1) export it as lossless then use another encoder (you are limited to 1 pass in AE) . I think CCE is the best MPEG2 encoder for SD, but HCenc may give you good results as well

    2) increase max bitrate to 9.5 , and target to 9

m is b-frames per GOP, n is the GOP length - don't touch them unless you know what you are doing

Part of the "blurriness" is RGB=>YV12 conversion . Chroma is subsampled for YV12 colorspace (no choice for MPEG2 for DVD)

  3. i will try your tips
The animation is not complex, just a slideshow of paintings and other artforms.
But it contains a lot of detail and colors.

I think you are right that I'm exceeding the limits of DVD MPEG2 compression.
That was the feeling I got when I exported it first.

  4. Was your comp 720x576 ?

Are you watching this on a normal HDTV or CRT ?

SD material doesn't look great on HDTV (LCD, plasma, etc...) , even if you have a good upscaler
