  1. I want to convert goodfellas to svcd. the dvd that i have is double sided or something like that. half the movie is on one side while the other half is on the opposite. i want to convert the FULL movie. so what i did was rip the .vob files from both sides. and then i combined them. for example: on the first side it said something like 01_04.VOB (the highest number). so i took the first vob from the second side and made it 01_05.VOB and so forth. but this procedure failed to get the whole movie, i only got first half. any suggestions on how to get the whole movie? i know one of you guys had to rip this classic. so please help. thanks in advance

  2. No commercial DVD will split a movie on a 2-sided disc (at least, none that I've seen), they will use a dual-layer disc if they need 9.4GB. I don't recall having to do anything special for that movie.

  3. You can't rename a vob file. The first vob file holds part of the movie and instructions to start the other vob files by opening it by it's file name. So if you change the name it woun't be able to open the files. And I own Goodfellas and it is double sided with half the movie on one side and the other half on the opposite.

  4. You can rename a VOB if you're feeding it through DVD2AVI, because it just uses the filenames to determine the sequence.

  5. @kinneera: that were my thoughts exactly. why would you put in on two sides rather than making it dual layered? this is the first dvd that i came across that did this. strange you got any suggestions?

@pimp: like kinn explained you can rename a vob if feeding it through dvd2avi. this only determines the order of the movie. since you own goodfellas, have you ripped it? if so, how did you go about obtaining all the vob's? and if you didn't, got any suggestions?

  6. The Pelican Brief, The Right Stuff, are alos 2 movies that you have to flip over to continue play. As for Pelican, I ripped both sides re-encoded and burned back to one DVD-R.

  7. I would just rip both sides, then rename all of the VOBs from the 2nd side in sequence starting where side 1's numbering left off. Then load them in DVD2AVI and process as normal.

  8. i already did that kinneera. the resultant mpeg-2 is only the first half of the movie. i used the ifo from the first one too. i doubt that switching ifo's would have any difference. any other suggestions?

  9. These suggestions might seem a little silly, but I'm fairly certain this can be done :

Make sure when you rip the second side, you don't let the VOBs overwrite the first set you ripped, since they will probably be numbered starting from 1 again.

Make sure you load every VOB into DVD2AVI, even if you have to do it manually. You can even give the VOBs names, like "Bob" and "Sally" and you'll still get all of the video as long as you load each one individually in the right sequence.

Or, on a totally different note, being as it is a long movie, and I presume you're going to want to put it on more than 1 CD, just process each side separately as if it were a separate movie, and voila, you'll have a 2-disc rip without having to worry about cutting it yourself.

  10. I don't Know if this will work but don't rename them and place in seperate folders. Just add the first side to DVD2AVI and the click on the add button and add on the second side. I will try and see if it works right now.

  11. Alright I tried it on Goodfellas and it worked. Don't rename the files. Save in different folders. When you select the first side in DVD2AVI and the little menu with the selected vobs shows up click add and add in the second side. It worked fine for me but I didn't encode so I don't Know the end result. I hope this helps and you see this post. By the way did you watch the DVD and if you did, did you notice in one scene I'm not sure what one but in one scene the screen is split in half. I don't mean like it was done on purpuse but there is a straight line in the middle of the screen going from top to bottom.

  12. also, one version of stargate is also front and back....

as a side note, keep in mind dvd2avi only accepts upto 9 vob files at a time....it won't work if you put 10+ vob files together

  13. that's the first i've heard of it. true, dvd2avi will only automatically load the first 9 .vobs, but that's because it treats the 1 in numbers above 10(or 2 in numbers above 20 etc) as part of the base filename. in other words dvd2avi only looks at the last char in the filename to determine if it is sequential. you can manually append as many .vobs as you want

  14. thnx for all the help guys!

but before i read this post i had successfuly ripped it i did what kinneera had said: i processed each side of the movie and now i have two mpeg-2 which will make two cd's.

@pimp: i have seen this movie but it has been a while since the last time. i will try to pin point the scence and then see how it came out on my own encodes.

by the way, the bitrate i had to use was pretty low. i used cce with 4 passes but my bitrate was mighty close to a vcd (i was aiming for svcd's). i havent actually burnt the mpeg-s yet so i will let you guys know later how the qaulity is.

thank you for all your help!
