    http://cgi.ebay.com/LG-CH08LS10-8x-Blu-Ray-16x-DVD-Writer-SATA-Lightscribe_W0QQitemZ15...15502784277588

I had bought this on monday morning to burn only BD-R at 4X or 8X speed it doesn't matter which speed it does it at.
The reason why I need this badly because I keep alot of stuff archived on my back up hdd.
I figure atleast when I have over 10gb's of important data to back up and move off of my pc just in case windows 7 prompts me one night and says the hdd is getting ready to give way again.

If your wondering why I am not using dual layer dvd's, it's not worth it for the kind of stuff I back up and the media doesn't last long.

Is LG correct on this site about this model specs ?

Not trying to be critical, but for your needs you could also have gotten a USB flash drive of sufficient capacity and backed stuff up to that. Honestly, that's got a better chance of still being readable in 20+ years than optical media. Don't get me wrong, your discs MAY be fine many years from now. But there's no reliable longevity data on consumer burnable BD media right now and for all we know whatever you burn now might be unreadable in 5 years or less. If I was going to use BD media for backup purposes and I was hoping to still be able to read this discs many years from now, I would only buy Verbatim single layer BD media (NOT the cheaper LTH discs - Avoid those like the plague!) and hope for the best. You might want to make multiple copies and consider the use of PAR2 recovery files on another piece of media if this is really important stuff you can't live without.

  3. Are you sure that is a BLuRay burner? Here is what Newegg says about it.

    LG Black 8X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 40X CD-ROM SATA Internal Combo LG Blu-ray Reader & 16X LightScribe DVD±R DVD Burner IT looks like a DVD Burner/BluRay reader.

There is no guarantee that a BD-R you burn will last any longer than a DVD you burn. I've seen many complaints about Ritek BD-R discs losing data over time and they haven't been around that long.

I have a Different model LG and it seems to like Verbatims and not like Philips blanks. I'm using the Standard Verbatim BD-R, Not the LTH Verbatims. I paid $1.60 per disc in a ten pack and that was on sale.

I'm not sure where you get the Dual Layer DVDs don't last long from. Could be the brand you tried. I've never had a problem with Verbatims.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

Good catch TBoneit. It is definitely a READ ONLY BD drive. Newegg sells the same drive and says it's read only.

Looks like MidnightMike still has a chance to think about my suggestion about the flash drive. Good luck getting a refund on Ebay. If you're lucky the seller will just give the refund with no hassle, but that doesn't always happen.

I remember this unit a few months ago when I was ready to buy a BD burner, which had conflicting info everywhere about whether it writes, or just reads, BD discs, so after I got fed up with this I ended up buying the LG BH10LS30 instead, depsite the higher price. I see your confusion too, so I can't say for sure - and now the specs for it are "old" and no longer on any sites. I bet even the store reps or mfg reps wouldn't know either.

Can you return it if it doesn't write to BD media? You may have a case if the info was misleading.

But for data backup, you can get a 2TB drive as a practical solution - they are dirt cheap today/GB, even more so than BD or DvD media, and more manageable.

Yes, I agree flash drives are the best, but they are so annoyingly expensive.
I hate VHS. I always did.

I just talked to LG customer support and I gave the model number for the drive I bought.
The head technician said, there is only one model that does BD-R at 4x, 8x and a max of 25x at 25gb.
I emailed him the auction listing in hour ago, and he seemed puzzled as why there 2 different drives with the same model number.

The seller is starting to become pissed at me and so am I at him, becauses he's getting ready to loose 95.00 for a item that doesn't have the correct information.
I'm angry because he finally coughs up the truth about the shipping time and says it be there next thursdayand then I have to wait on a 3 day rma label from him....

Since I do have alot of experience with computers even a tecnical degree, I'll see if LG is correct and use a copy of nero 8 basic system drive info to tell me what this drive can do and cannot do.

About the flash drive thing the max capacity I keep on me or at my house is 8gb's.

I understand your anger MidnightMike, but technically speaking what you saw is simply deceptive and not untruthful. Nothing in either the Ebay listing or the LG web page on the model says it writes BluRays. In fact, if you look at the detailed listing on Ebay about halfway down, it clearly does not list BD as a supported write format. I grant you that the overwhelming majority of people who see a listing saying "LG CH08LS10 8x Blu-Ray &16x DVD Writer SATA Lightscribe" would take it to mean it is a BluRay writer, but technically it doesn't say "Blu-Ray writer". It says "Blu-Ray &16x DVD Writer". "Blu-Ray" just means BD-ROM only apparently.

Flash drives now come as large as 256 GB and while that is certainly overkill for your needs, Newegg is selling a good Patriot 32GB drive for $46.99 with rebate.

Yeah, that is sneaky, creepy and untruthful advertising tactics.

MidnightMike, is there no such rule that you can send back any online bought item within 2 weeks??
