  1. Dear Experts,

I have some big MPEG-PS files that were made VHS -> hard disk.
    About 2 gigs in size.

I'm looking for a free software that will:
    - be free to use, not a free trial
    - work right out of the box
    - work on Windows XP
    - be user obvious, not requiring documentation, education or a learning curve
    - cut clips/sections from the big MPEG-PS files, and write them to many MPEG-PS files
    - keep the exact same file and audio format
    - allow me to stop at individual frames

Is there such a software? What is it please?

BTW, what is the correct buzzword for this? Splitting? Cutting?

    Thanks a lot

Maybe tsmuxer, under split & cut can you cut by size, save as ts files.

  3. For MPEG-PS , mpg2cut2 or avidemux , but they are only keyframe accurate

allow me to stop at individual frames
You need pay ware for this functionality, because the GOP has to be re-rendered, and no free software does this. It's called "smart rendering" and video is passed though untouched , except where cuts are beteen GOP boundaries

e.g. videoredo, womble mpeg dvd wizard

    HI Baldrick

I've been looking at tsmuxer. It was recommended in another post.
The design is simple, and it looks pretty solid.

But the output format is not MPEG.
Actually it doesn't seem to make any output format I recognize like AVI, MP4, etc.

Is there a secret to make it output MPEG files?

    HI poisondeathray
Yes, I've looked at mpg2cut2 and avidemux.

mpg2cut2 had problems with the sound drivers.
It also had an odd character based interface.
It mentions DOS in the error message. Is it from the DOS era?

Avidemux I struggled with for hours and hours yesterday.
It is a full blown editing software. Not what I'm looking to do.
I just want to change the oil, not build a car from scratch.

Avidemux required that I know everything about video, codecs, editing, etc.
Kept giving me error messages about the rate of the sound.
But no help at all on which one of the many, many, many options to click,
    or to what value.

Thus, after all the struggle, I'm asking the question.

Are there any others that are free, and fit the bill closely enough, say keyframe accurate?
As I say, tsmuxer looks good, but it doesn't output MPEG or any
    common format, useful to me.

  6. tsmuxer outputs mpeg2 transport stream (mpeg-ts - ie. .m2ts,.ts), not mpeg2 program stream (mpeg-ps - i.e. .mpg, .mpeg) , it only cuts by timecode (no visual preview)

transport streams are very common and useful. Almost all software supports them. They are used for camcorders, broadcast (tv), blu-ray, avchd

it's just a container format (think of it like a box or packaging). You can remove the elementary video & audio out of the "box" and repackage into other containers as well , including back into mpeg-ps

avidemux is easy to use - set the side bars to video=> copy, audio=> copy, output=> mpeg-ps , mark in/mark out , press save and enter extension (e.g. "myvideo.mpg")

It really stream copies the marked segment, not really cutting (ie. the original video is unaltered)

Maybe other people have other suggestions

You could try MOVICA version 6.6.1

Just for information - previously I found that Movica wouldn't run when transferred to a new Windows 7, 64 bit PC - not that I had ever used it much on XP.

I had to use corflags.exe to modify it to run on the new setup.

I could not get Movica to work, but AvideMux 2.7 worked great on Windows 10, and was able to nicely splice my 'bad' MPEG-PS that Windows would report as only 15 seconds long.
