Recently, sound was suddenly cut off from firefox/flash player. VLC plays sound fine yet youtube and other sites have no sound!

When I click on the speaker icon in the taskbar windows gives the error message: "There is a problem with your sound hardware. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware."

It has never displayed this message before, and I have never had any serious sound problem (other than when a week ago VLC's audio was choppy for a period of time [media player classic worked fine], but after a day or two it disappeared on it's own).

The strange thing is that the volume control window that was already up before the problem occurred continued to function properly even when the speaker icon gave me the error message.

It could be an actual HW problem, or possibly a driver issue. Open device manager and look at the
    sound section for anything unusual.
