Hi folks. I've been playing around with different formats for ripping Blu Rays so I can put them on a hard drive for use on my Xbox 360 and Seagate Freeagent Theater +. I have a small M2TS file that I was using to test. When I hit the DLNA server from my Xbox I can stream the file fine but when I put it on a USB stick the xbox doesn't see it. Why?

It's my understanding that the Xbox 360 cannot play M2TS files directly. The DLNA server massages the M2TS file so the Xbox 360 can play it.

Yes the ps3 can play the m2ts natively but the xbox 360 can not. The 360 can play wmv natively and some variants of mp4. You'll have to remux the file into one of those to play natively. The 360 is picky about mp4 files but not so much with wmv - its a little more flexible in wmv. It can also play divx if you want to reencode to that format as well. It can play 5.1 ac3 in divx and it can also play 5.1 wma audio in wmv. I am pretty sure it can't play 5.1 aac in mp4 - that would need to converted to ac3 to play properly.
