  1. hey,

a friend of me gave me a large .mp4 (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) file(2.64gb). And now i want to burn it to dvd. But i have no clue how. converting it to avi makes the file way to big. I normally use total video converter but mayby that's not good for this conversion. The dvd is 4,7gb. Mayby i could burn it on two discs? my dvdplayer can't read .mp4 files. Anyone has a clue how to convert this file?

you have my thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english

The size of any video file is mainly determined by two things, the running time and the bitrate used. If you plan to go to a DVD for conversion, just guessing, but you might consider two discs or at least a dual layer disc. We have bitrate calculators that will tell you what size it will turn out to be. One is: VideoHelp Bitrate calculator

For best quality, you usually want a bitrate between 5000 and 9000Kb/s. If with a single 4.7GB DVD it gets down closer to 2000Kb/s the quality usually suffers.

I'd probably try one of the all-in-one converters, maybe AVStoDVD or one of these here: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/all-in-one-dvd-converters They will fit it to your selected size and author it to a compatible DVD format for burning to DVD.

Others members may have better advice.

    And welcome to our forums.

Yep I'd recommend avstodvd also. Another freeware program to checkout is multiavchd - though its a bit more complex on the front end than avstodvd. They both have the same flexibility but avstodvd puts the more complex options in submenus so you don't have to tackle em unless you want to.

But both will do the job very well.

If you simply want to burn the mp4 file to a dvdr to store as an archive you can burn with imgburn as data. Than you can copy the file again later when you need it.

You can also use imgburn to burn the final completed video_ts folder that you get from avstodvd or multiavchd. Imgburn is also freeware.

  4. thanks, i will try those programs right now! yesterday i also tried the program imtoo mpeg encoder! it converted my file to a 3,8gb .vob file. but it has lost alot of it's quality! and also my dvd player can't read it ( burned it simply with nero 8, placing the vob file on the dvd, this was
probably the wrong way to do it i guess )

and where can i see what bitrate my current file is( the .mp4)?

  6. it's now converting with avstodvd. i set the minimum rate to 3500 and max to 9000. and now it's going to be 4,4gb. is their a way to split it into two dvd's with this program? (so i can set the bitrate mutch higher and burn it on two dvd's)

and i can also see that avstodvd is making a .m2v file... how do i burn that?
