Ok, so I'm thinking of buying an Intensity Shuttle and to use on my laptop. It does not have USB 3.0 but am will to upgrade it, if at all possible.
I also notice that I must have an x58 motherboard. How do i find out what my motherboard is?
Finally, is it even at all possible to use the Blackmagic Intensity shuttle with my laptop?
Laptop Specs:
Processor Intel Core i7 Q740 @ 1.74GHz
Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5780
Ram: 6GB
HDD: 1TB
Cheers for any helpful or unhelpful comments :P

It's probably not possible to add USB 3.0 to your laptop. Does it have a PCMCIA (AKA PC-Card) expansion slot?

There are ExpressCard USB 3.0 adapters. First hurdle surmounted.
My guess is you don't really need the X58 chipset. That's probably just a CYA move on BlackMagic's part. You can use Device Manager to give a hint what chipset you have. Look under "System Devices". Your i7 is probably sufficient. You'll need to use realtime compression since your hard drive isn't fast enough to save uncompressed. -
Intel PM55 Express Chipset LPC interface controller???
Or
Intel 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1/2/4
Something like that?
And with the hard drive, could I use my eSATA 2TB external HDD to go uncompressed?Last edited by SkinnyRabbit; 1st Nov 2010 at 09:05.

doesn't anyone read the support pages any more?
Can I use a USB 3.0 ExpressCard in my Mac or Windows notebook?
ExpressCards for notebooks are not supported and will not work. The bandwidth they currently support is not suitable for Intensity Shuttle, UltraStudio Pro or Pocket UltraScope.--

He didn't say they don't exist, he said they don't have sufficient bandwidth. I have seen no information on real world throughput of current USB 3.0 ExpressCards. Though I wouldn't be surprised if this is another CYA move on the part of BlackMagic.

I don't know if it will work or not. But it wouldn't surprise me if BlackMagic simply says ExpressCard USB 3.0 adapters won't work because many laptops simply aren't powerful enough to support the device and they don't want to deal with support calls and returns. You'll have to try it your self or find someone who has tried it with a similar laptop. Or just take their word for it.

Laptop ExpressCard slots are PCIe Gen 1 (2.5Gb/s). They do not provide the bandwidth required for the Intensity Shuttle.
-
By my calculations an 8-bit YUV 4:2:2 1080i cap requires a little less than 1 Gb/s. 10 bit brings it up to about 1.25 Gb/s. Of course, real world throughput* of a 2.5 Gb/s device will be lower than 2.5 Gb/s. And other processing delays could cause problems with realtime processes when there's not sufficient overhead on the bus.
If I was buying one under the OP's conditions I'd be sure to get it from a place with a "no questions asked" return policy.
* Real world throughput of USB 2.0 devices is about half the advertised 480 Mb/s.Last edited by jagabo; 2nd Nov 2010 at 05:58.

USB3.0 Host Controller overhead kills the bandwidth. There is only one USB3.0 host controller solution right now - Renesas - but there will be more in the future so this problem will get fixed.

Just found out that the slot where the express card goes is 54mm, not a 34mm slot. Any difference?

I have seen in other forums that BM has confirmed the Shuttle works with HP's Envy 15" with a high-end I7 processor. Also saw somewhere they were trying to figure out why it didn't work with the Envy 17".

Not to savvy with tech terms so bare with me:
I have an HM55 Express Chipset which has 3GB/s data speeds. And i have an i7 with USB 3.0. Any chance at all that it will work now or in the future with the Intensity Shuttle, or still very unlikely? -

It seems like some people have finally found compatible laptops, such as the new Lenovo T420s:

My guess is that we will still have to wait a pretty long time before BM officially supports any laptop use. Supporting the intensity shuttle seems to be pretty low in their priorities. It took 6 months before they released drivers offering all the advertised features (480p capture). I would abstain from purchasing a laptop before I hear of new conclusive field tests. -
I know Black magic says the Shuttle will not work using an Express Card to usb3.0 adapter but has any one got that to work? I have an m6600, the shuttle works running on the native usb3, but I need to add a second Shuttle..
It has a QM67 chipset with 6 Gbit/s, 2 Ports & 3 Gbit/s, 4 Ports. From what I was told by Dell, the usb3.0 is on one of the 6 Gbit/s and the express card is on the other 6 Gbit/s, that should be enough bandwidth for a second shuttle but nothing works when running off the adapter.. It's like BM sees that its an adapter and grays everything out.. Any ideas or help would rock.
