    Keep in mind, MP4 is only a container, it's what's in it that counts.

    Nevertheless, I too say VLC (although QuickTime and DivX Player have improved much over the last few years.)

    But if you do want to play the MP4 files on WMP, depending what's in them, then you should install ffdshow (or look into CCPC). Avoid installing any of those codec packs as my recommendation (such as K-Lite) - very bad.

    Note: If you want mimimal installations, without having to install all those codecs, decoders, external software, Apple stuff, etc, just stick with one app, VLC, since it runs on its own internal decoders.
    I hate VHS. I always did.
