  1. On my workspace in Lotus notes, I have "local" and "D05NM..." on my workspace. What is the difference as both allows me to send and receive mail?

What is replication exactly? I have used Outlook all my life so this replication is new to me.

    first of all, i'm sorry.

next..local is probably a local replica of your mail file..whereas the other one is probably the server copy..having a local copy lets you get in and check your mail/write mail/etc. without having to be connected to the network..of course you have to connect before actually sending off any emails you wrote.

at the end of the links in your workspace is probably a ".nsf" file which represents a notes mail file. it's sort of like a little database that holds all the info about your mail/calendar/etc. right click on the icons in your workspace and I think you go to document properties or something like that and it will show you the path/name of the .nsf file...the D05NM... is probably the beginning of the server name.something like D05NMLServer/x/y/z/YourMailFile.nsf

Replication is the act of synchronizing the server copy of your mail (.nsf) file with the local copy.

  3. I can send and receive mail whether I have my mail set to the local or the D05NMLServer. I think the D05 is remote and the other one is local. I get confused if local means on my hard drive. But since I can receive and send mail when I set to "local", I am guessing local just means the server near my location?

Me too. Notes is so bad that it actually makes Exchange look OK. And Exchange is pretty bad. But Exchange laughs and says "At least I'm not Lotus Notes".

To be 100% sure I would have to have physical access to your setup and that's not going to happen, but local almost certainly means on your PC's hard drive.
