Hi, I tried to make a DIVX of a home recorded DVD (DVD Recorder) from TV footage. I get picture with distorted quality, i.e. edgy lines and bad characters. I tried all de-interlacing settings, but the problem remains. I use Magic DVD Ripper with divx codec to encode to DIVX.
Strangely, other DVD's (also homemade recorded TV footage) convert to Divx without these problems... I don't get it.
See images below: badly readable subtitles and texts, edgy lines while the original (not on image) is absolutely flawless...

Looks like a simple "discard field and resize" deinterlace. The best deinterlacers are in AviSynth: Yadif, TGMC, etc. Yadif is also available in VirtualDub.

I tried the de-interlacing options in both the FFD and DIVX codec in Magic DVD Ripper, like Yadif etc... The result is the pictures above. I don't see how I can de-interlace the VOB files on my DVD?

Thanks
I joined a short segment of the videosource (VOB file from DVD).Last edited by fredo2010; 27th Oct 2010 at 10:57.

That's definitely progressive. Here's a quick conversion to Xvid, Target Quantizer 3, with VirtualDubMod. No deinterlacing, no filtering at all.

Thanks, looks great! Too bad Magic DVD Ripper doesn't have the same results using the same encoder (FFDshow, Xvid) and settings... Magic DVD ripper is practical as it can rip and encode
simultanously, and has more audio options.
Any ideas?
thanks!Last edited by fredo2010; 27th Oct 2010 at 12:06.

As long as your DVD isn't CSS encrypted you can open VOB files directly from the DVD with VirtualDubMod. But it's limited to working with one VOB file at a time. If you use VirtualDub instead, and the MPEG 2 plugin for it, you can open full VOB sets at once.

Here's the same frame as you posted above with a discard field and resize in VirtualDub:
It looks just like your sample. -
OK, but that still doesn't ring a bell to me what settings in Magic DVD Ripper are wrong?

No one uses that program so no one can tell you where you went wrong. Other programs have already been suggested. You can either continue to beat your head against a wall by using your program, or you can follow the suggestions offered. You can even open the VOB(s) in AutoGk and let it create the DivX AVI.

There are a lot of third rate video editing/conversion programs out there. Many are from companies that glue a little front end onto a bunch of open source software. Those companies often don't know much about video, they're just in it to make a quick buck.

Maybe, but I always found the Magic Ripper very complete. But thanks for all reactions! After the all, the problem is solved

There are many such similar programs available on the 'Net, particularly DvD -> iPod apps, that usually sell for something like $39.99, or the like, that act like a "complete solution".
Pure garbage. Although I haven't tried Magic DvD Ripper, I would bet it's just as much a waste of time.
They are usually made by some Joe, and his buddy, who took some entry level programming course, built a "GUI" that looks like it's something high tech while stuffing some freely available programs under the hood, built some Web site, got some third party financial company for their purchase management (who charges them a huge percentage for each transaction because they too are a scam and prey on small companies that the real banks reject) and started posting their product anywhere that allows them too.
They act like they're some authority on the subject when they know very little, and target those that likely know less. And some even have a Web site that looks like they're some huge company when many of them are penniless and run out of their "office" in their parents' basement.
I too would listen to Jagabo and Manono's advice.I hate VHS. I always did.
