It is possible to capture DV on a Mac using an ADVC. It will most likely be a .dv file though, so it will have to be repacked as an AVI afterwards.

iMovie (any version) will see the Canopus ADVC when plugged into the firewire port. No drivers are needed. iMovie defaults to a DV format project and can export DV as *.dv. Quicktime Pro on Mac can convert *.dv to DV-AVI. Another program that can convert *.dv in Windows is Enosft DV Processor.

Be sure to turn device control off in iMovie preferences. Otherwize it will freeze waiting for tape to cue.
