I've purchased a DVD set from the UK in hopes of ripping and converting to NTSC. The discs are not available in the US.

*NOTE THAT I HAVE BOUGHT THESE AND AM ONLY DOING THIS FOR MY PERSONAL USE*

So, I tried using Mac the Ripper to rip the files. When I do so, there are errors in the rip and opening in MPEG Streamclip, it tells me that there are no video files. I've also tried using PavTube. That program hangs.

I've never had a problem ripping discs.

Can anyone suggest any alternatives? Once I get the files ripped, it's smooth sailing. But the problem is getting these things ripped!!!

    Any advice?

BIG mistake. It is very difficult with usually crappy results.

Rip it to make it region free - watch on your computer until you find a "converting" DVD player.

But that's the problem. As I said, I tried MactheRipper and PavTube. It won't rip.

That's what I need help with.

I can name several tools (freebie ones too) for a PC....but MacTheRipper and RipIt are the only ones I know of for Mac.
And you do know that ripping it to make it "region free" does NOT solve the PAL/NTSC issue right? - just checking.

  5. i use ripit or Mac DVDRipper Pro for ripping, then i use YADE to extract the content of the disc as 1 big VOB and i then use visualhub to convert to NTSC

Handbrake. But don't try to convert it to NTSC; instead, just leave it as PAL (25fps) and watch it:

    - on your computer.
    - on your TV through an AppleTV.
    - on your TV through an iPod.
    - on your TV through a Western Digital TV Media Player.

The latter three methods will work fine because both the AppleTV and iPod will play almost any framerate on an NTSC TV. I do not know how far afield the WD player will permit but I do know it plays PAL framerate media just fine on an NTSC TV.

I seem to be able to rip now. I've got an external Blu-Ray burner. Because it didn't make me change the region on that drive, I was able to play them in DVD Player. For giggles, I decided to try ripping after that. It seems that if I play a disc first, then it will rip. This isn't the case with any other discs that I've tried, but as long as I can get at the files I'm happy.

For PAL -> NTSC, I've always had good luck with the the Slow-PAL method on this page:

I've got a Seagate Freeagent Theatre+ and playing ripped PAL discs on that has always worked just fine. I'm giving the conversion thing a try anyway because I need to be able to play the discs on a TV that doesn't have a media player.

I seem to remember that some of the ripping apps require that you play a portion of the movie first so the decryption keys may be determined by DVD Player; then the ripping app uses those keys. As I use Handbrake almost exclusively these days I had forgotten about that.

Thanks for the link to the Slow-Pal method; I'll check it out. Always good to have another tool in the toolbox.

Also, try the Nattress Standards Conversion plug-in. I hear that works extremely well.
