When I capture using my DV Bridge in Adobe Premier, the file info says the compressor is DV Soft (dvsd). What exactally is DV Soft? Is it a codec? If so how does it rate? Is there any other compressors that I can use besides DV Soft that yield great results?
Thanks, im new but learning fast!

You can get DV codecs from Adaptec (free) and Mainconcept.I tested both and found no real difference (quality and speed wise).AFAIK DV Soft is the Adaptec variety of the codec.

DV is compressed using MJPEG technology, compressing the videostream excactly 5 times. This doesn't leave much room for loss of quality, so it *shouldn't* matter all too much which DV codec you use! Only thing to watch is, if you are encoding analog video to the DV format, make sure your hardware is able to handle the video stream nicely. That's where loss of quality will occur!

DVsoft is an Adaptec DV codec.
The Mainconcept DV codec is touted as the "best" DV codec at the moment, and I wouldn't argue with that. I've had no trouble with it and have gotten very nice files with it.
Avoid the Microsoft DV codec; it starts to visually lose quality on the first re-encode from DV to DV. 'Good' DV codecs don't suffer visual loss until the third re-encode.
