Is there any way at ALL to play in full HD (1080p with HDMI) and record with an external capture card in SD? I though maybe I could split the HDMI signal and use a converter box or something to turn the HDMI to RCA and record there but it's impossible to find an HDMI to RCA converter box that does not cos 100 freaking dollars. please help! thanks!

Unless the playback device also outputs an SD signal you'll need the converter. Most cable boxes for instance also output composite/s-video when playing HD material.
