I have a copy of MyDVD, which I believe is more or less the same as DVDit!. It will accept mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 video files, but it will not burn mpeg-1 layer 2 audio, which is the default audio compression format for all mpeg files. For some stupid reason, MyDVD uncompresses the audio to PCM audio, and waste a *HUGE* amount of space on the DVD. Every DVD player can decode mpeg-1 layer 2 audio, so why is MyDVD converting all audio to uncompressed PCM? I know that the NTSC DVD "spec" calls for one PCM audio stream, whatever that is good for, but this is not the case for PAL DVD's. So, I want to burn a DVD with no PCM audio on the disk, only mpeg-1 layer 2 audio. Is there any authoring software out there that will burn true mpeg files without messing with the audio? I do not want any PCM audio on the DVD.

Hi there,
MyDVD is not the same as DVDit!. I got MyDVD with my Philips DVD+RW 208, but I didn't even tried it, because MyDVD is a piece of crap (that's what I heard.)
You need to try SpruceUP or Maestro. In SpruceUP you can load multiplexed MPEG-2 file with MPEG audio track. In Maestro you need to load them as seperate files.
Also if you load multiplexed file in DVDit!, it will burn it. I was able to di it once (I may be wrong).

Don't know if this helps but, DVDit PE will compress audio to Dobly digital or PCM.... your choice.

Thanks for the info!
I also read that Ulead DVD movie factory should be able to burn mp2 audio directly without converting to PCM. Also, I'm hoping Nero will add a simple template for burning multiplexed mpeg files to a DVD.
To make a DVD usefull for VHS transfers, it should be able to handle 4 hours of 352x480 mpeg-2 video and audio, or 5 hours of mpeg-1 352x240 files. I can easily play those files on a CD-R, so I see no reason why it shouldn't work on a DVD-R! -

Dolby digial = recompression, takes time.
The captured audio and video from most mpeg devices have the audio already compressed as mpeg-1 layer 2, a perfectly fine format for every DVD player. Why waste space by converting to PCM, or waste time converting to Dolby Digital? -
Thanks everybody!
A copy of Ulead Moviefactory is less than $50, a good price, and it will do what I want to. Still, I have a copy of MyDVD that will get no use... -

I hope Nero comes out with a simple template that will burn any mpeg file to a DVD, and then let the DVD player figure out what it can play... then all the so called DVD authoring software makers can take a hike :)
