Hope this post is OK here
Just like to share my rescent experience of HD.
I'm blown away by it to be honest! I know I'm a novice & I've only got a Sony dsc-hx5v (still camera with 1080i video) as an HD cam but nevertheless, I'm astounded at the quality of what this little camera has produced! Hooked up to my LG full HD telly via HDMI, the picture quality is truly remarkable! (as are the stills) The problem is- all my previous footage on dvd now looks like VHS
I've encoded the HD clips down to SD DVD for sharing & I'm a wee bit dissapointed at the result, it's not terrible or anything but not what I consider DVD quality. Although, I did this via sony PMB so a different encoder might produce a better output????
Anyway, my novice head is full of Blu-rays at the moment!
Best regards
Lily

you could try multiAVCHD, it has an option for SD dvd output. and you're right a better encoder would help.

Keep in mind that most movie DVDs contain 23.976 fps progressive frames with 3:2 pulldown flags. That compresses much better than 29.97 fps interlaced frames that you're probably encoding. Other issues like shaky camera work, noisy video (especially under low light) only make it worse.
