  1. My camcorder puts out AVCHD files and I was going to upgrade to Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 or Elements, but it sounds like once the AVCHD are imported, edited, when they are rendered to one file they are recompressed again (Mpeg4?)?? Compressing again does not sound good. I want the best burnt to blu-ray. What is the best way to do this?

Yep, everything will be reconverted. But I think you can use the mainconcept mpeg pro premiere plugin to get so called smart rendering where it only reconverts transitions.

If you just are going to cut, join maybe you could try videoredo 4 preview.

But you wont lose that much quality by reconverting/compressing if you use high enough bitrate/keep around same file size as the source.

  3. I need a little more help with understanding mainconcept mpeg pro, and the steps after using it.

In theory, I would take my camcorder AVCHD (mpeg 4AVC/h.264) files and import the in premiere/mainconcept for editing, render to one AVCHD (mpeg 4AVC/h.264) file (it does not recompress again but renders AVCHD (mpeg 4AVC/h.264) files?), the, Author, burn to blu-ray?

    Is this correct?

  4. Nope. Smart rendering doesn't work for CS5 yet (plugin hasn't been updated yet), only for CS4 and below

If you use global filters (e.g. like color correction ) that affect the entire sequence, everything has to be re-rendered anyway. The "smart rendering" is only for "cuts & paste type" editing

If you don't have any editing to do, you can author the native files with multiavchd (no re-encoding, thus original quality)

If you want first generation quaity (no recode) to the Blu-Ray disc, you can cut on I frames (half second precision).

AVCHD "smart rendering" is a goal not yet a reality as far as I know. Smart rendering allows cuts inside the GOP but only re-renders the GOPs affected by the cut. Further, a smart rendering editor will keep track of all imported GOPs and pass (copy) unprocessed GOPs to the output file. Any filtering, translation or compositing of GOPs will result in a re-render for the GOPs affected. In all cases, the output file needs to exactly match the input file for raster size, format and bit rate for smart rendering to work.

Currently prgrams like Vegas Pro smart render DV, MPeg2, HDV, XDCAM, etc. but not yet AVCHD.

  6. Best recoded rendered video picture?
Lets say I skip smart rendering and go with premier pro cs5 or premiere elements to create a recoded render file for authoring; can premiere elements be put at a high bit rate to equal the what premier pro cs5 can create recoded rendered file?

Are you trying to make a disc that will play on Blu-Ray? If not what?

Premiere Elements has limited Blu-Ray encoding options. I don't have it. Suggest you download the manual.

I'm also unsure whether Elements can author a Blu-Ray disc (assuming a Blu-Ray burner). In the past Elements could only output a Blu-Ray compatible MPeg2 file.

Is this only to BD media or can Elements make an "AVCHD" DVDR disc?

  12. I can't answer that question. I would recommend that you ask that question here:
