cutting and saving a section of video

I had home movies digitized and put on disk. I'd like to cut sections, save the sections and use them as inserts in a PowerPoint presentation. Can anyone tell me the best way to accomplish the cut and save??? I have downloaded both video dub and virtual dub. I've been able to cut sections and save the original edited video but not the cut segment alone.

Mark-in, mark-out, File -> Save as AVI.
