  1. Hi,

I got an LG BD570 and much to my disappointment, it can't play video_ts (.vob). I have to use a DLNA media player and it works fine with transcoding. However, I'd like to play without having to do any extra processing, plus I can connect my external USB drive and play my media directly.

Does anyone know which bluray player can play video_ts directly? TIA

  2. Most people when they mention VIDEO_TS files mean DVDs. Since this thing (and all Blu-Ray players) plays DVDs, I'm not sure what you're asking. Can you clarify? Is all you have is VOB files, and not true DVDs with the IFOs and BUPs included?

  3. Sorry I should have been clearer. Most of my movies are ripped and store on USB external drive in DVD format (VIDEO_TS/*.vob). I want to connect the drive to the LG's USB port and read it directly but unfortunately, it does not like the format. I can work around by renaming from .vob to .mpg but I am hesitating to do that unless I have no other choices.

  4. Did you ever find a solution to this? I am trying to figure out a suitable answer. I have many DVDs on my hard drive. And a Sony Blu-Ray that doesn't play vobs. I tried transcoding and was very unhappy with the quality f the results.

If you are PC you may try: VOB2MPG with combines the vob files ad makes them Mpeg files. I am Mac so i was not able to try this. It merely repackages without recoding since .vob files are really mpegs. This is a free program too.

They are, but it's worth mentioning that there is a lot more in the DVD .VOB structure than just the MPEG files. There is also chapter data, alternate languages, subtitles and alternate subtitles, alternate audio streams and formats, alternate DVD angles, etc. But if you just want a MPEG, VOB2MPG is one way to go.

Simply renaming .VOBs works most times with simple DVD structures, but not always. And since .VOBs are ~1GB in size, most DVDs have several of them. The renamed MPEG files will need to be joined. There can be sync problems with this simple conversion and joining.

And with either method, you will lose chapter information and the DVD navigation structure.

LangTuSJ: I'm understanding that LG BD570 player won't play a VIDEO_TS folder, or the same in a ISO container, over the USB/LAN connection from a hard drive? If so, then VOB2MPG may be one way around the problem and you could convert your DVDs to MPEG.

Other members may know of a BD player that can handle the VIDEO_TS folders from a hard drive.
