  1. I'd like to rip my entire DVD collection to a large hard drive and use a stand-alone media player for playback with upconversion, DVD menu support and I don't want to re-encode (I want to leave them as IFO/VOB files). I'd like to be able to connect a USB hard drive to the player or access the files on networked drive.

I thought the FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player would work for me so I bought it...but the playback isn't smooth during action sequences (slight stuttering). I've also tried using a PC with various Linux media players (VLC, etc), but the video occasionally shows horizontal lines and isn't as good as my upconverting DVD player.

Does anyone know of something that would fit my requirements? I'd really appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks!

Didn't you try a media center software for linux? Like XBMC, MythTV, GeeXboX . They should be better than just VLC.

But if you want a media player I recommend visiting http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1160835 .

  3. To get rid of the "horizontal lines" in VLC enable the deinterlacer.
