  1. ok, i can get the audio in FLV files to play in mplayer (Media Player Classic) but it won't display the video. Windows media player and Winamp won't even play the audio, just rejects the file outright, but i don't really care about that, just mplayer.

Here is what i have tried so far...

    - installed ffdshow. made sure mplayer.exe is listed as one of the programs to use ffdshow in ffdshow video configuration app.
    - in mplayer, i have unchecked the built in FLV codec in the edit > options > Internal Filters. i have also tried having the FLV option checked, again no joy.
    - in mplayer, under edit > options > formats, again have tried having "Flash Video File" checked and uncheked. also have tried all the options to the right of the "Flash Video File" checkbox (DirectShow, RealMedia, Quicktime and Shockwave).
    - in mplayer, under edit > options > external filters, have added ffdshow as an external filter and set the priority of ffdshow to "Prefer"

funny thing is, every other video format works fine (mpeg, avi, vob, wav, etc). the audio/video plays fine and the little ffdshow icons for audio and video come up on the bottom right of the taskbar (i'm running WinXP). but when i goto play an FLV file, only the ffdshow audio icon comes up and no video is displayed. i am sure the FLV files i am trying to play are not corrupted because they play just fine in mplayer/ffdshow on my desktop, but for some strange and frustrating reason my laptop just refuses to display the video.

any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

    thank you.

What is the video codec in the flv? Identify using medianifo. It could be on2, h264, etc and then check so it's enabled in ffdshow.

You can also try install the flv splitter.

  3. Hi Baldrick,

many thanks for your reply. here is the info generated by mediainfo on the FLV file i am trying to play:

    Flash Video: 21.0MiB, 6mn 21s
    1 video stream: VP6
    1 audio stream: MPEG Audio
    Tagged date: UTC 2010-05-21 20:09:22
Tagging application: inlet media FLVTool2 v1.0.6

    First video stream: 390Kbps, 528*352 (3:2) at 25.000fps, VP6
First audio stream: 64.0Kbps, 22.05KHz, 16bits, 2channels, MPEG Audio (Version 2) (Layer 3) (Joint Stereo / MS Stereo)

in ffdshow, VP6 is enabled to a value of "libavcodec"

will try installing FLV splitter, will update on how that goes....

  4. ok, i downloaded the FLV Splitter zip file but all it contains is one file called "FLVSplitter.ax" There is no installer program (.exe, or .msi, etc) so how exactly do i go about installing this thing? i'm guessing i just cut and paste the file somewhere but where do i put it? or is it something else entirely?

    thank you.

  5. there are instructions on the download page

Extract the .ax file to a folder and then Start->Run and type regsvr32 "C:\Locationto\FLVSPlitter.ax" to install it.

when i click on that, a dialog containing this info pops up:

ok i ran that command in Start > run and got this error message:

    DllRegisterServer in c:\FLVSplitter.ax failed.
    Return code was: 0x800700005

...and a warm thank you goes out to whoever wrote that program for giving descriptive, non cryptic error messages ladies and gentlemen

  9. perhaps my efforts would be better spent learning how to convert FLV to something more user-friendly like mpeg or avi? i never particularly cared for FLV in the past, and this latest fiasco is starting to make me actively despise it.

many thanks for the help so far... keep the ideas coming i will try any suggestions.
