I am looking to buy one DVD/video converting software. I have been looking online and have a headache from all the different options. If I'm buying I'd like to get the best one (most options and fastest, easy to use) out there. Anyone have recommendations on which one is the best to get. Please advise. Thanks.

Why buy when you can get freeware?
I like format factory for most conversions.
Super is another good one.
Xvid4psp is also good but does more than just xvid and works on more platforms than just the psp.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I don't like Super at all. The other two are worth trying. But even then...
But for best quality, ConvertXtoDVD has been excellent. (Yes, not free, but not expensive either.)
I like freeware. But sometimes payware works better. I think this is one of those times.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I'm not sure why anyone would buy ConvertXtoDVD when AVStoDVD is available for free. Using the HC encoder, it produces great results when converting to dvd-video. ConvertX might be faster by a few minutes, but hardly an overwhelming reason to purchase it.
Handbrake is good for conversions to H264 mp4 or mkv files.
If you need xvid avi files, Xvid4PSP has already been mentioned, and there is the old standby, AutoGK. All of these are free. -
Hi,
I have been using AVC any video converter the free version for over a year now, it works great & has been updated often.
Here is a link to it.

Hope this helps -
that really depends on whether you mean you want to be able to convert from dvd to another format or from another format to dvd. if you want to convert to dvd, then i think nearly everyone here would agree that cce is your best choice for high quality, fast mpeg-2 encoding that's limited to dvd spec resolutions:
http://www.cinemacraft.com/en/ccesp3.html
other good dvd spec compliant mpeg-2 encoders to considers are HC (free, considered by many to be almost as good as cce) and tmpg plus:
http://www.bitburners.com/hc-encoder/
http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tp.html
both of these are a bit out of date however, if you're leaning towards pegasys' products tmpg express is a better choice, though pricier:
http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/shopping/te4xp.html
on the free side ffmpeg with one of the many open source gui's is pretty good as is mencoder.
if you're looking for software that transcodes from dvd to another format, like mp4, then your choices are all over the place. if you have a cuda enabled video card and are looking for a fast, good, free solution, then media coder nt cuda edition is a solid choice:
http://www.mediacoderhq.com/cuda/
word to the wise, it defaults to chinese (the media coder forums explain how to change to english) and it's currently limited to 1280x720 but it's as fast as badaboom and it's free.
espresso is another wonderful little app, it features gpu acceleration for both nvidia and ati/amd cards (check the supported list to see if your card qualifies), encodes to various formats but it's not really a power users app as the encoding parameters are kind of limited. on the positive side the encodes are high quality and fast as hell (on my system with a low level quad core and a mid level video card it encodes 1080p 10mb/s video faster than real time, e.g. an 18 minute clip encodes in 11 minutes).
i know, i probably made your decision even worse. -

Sorry for the confusion. I was looking for something that will covert DVDs to *.mkv or avi files. I was using Handbrake before, but it doesn't crop the black bars from the side of the movie so doesn't look good on a wide screen TV. The movies that I am ripping are mostly Indian movies, some old, some new and I'd like to covert them to mkv or avi file and keep em on computer.
