hi. my philips 3455 dvdr won't cycle up to where i can watch dvd's, play saved recordings, or even watch tv thru the player. i tried reformatting the hd, and even another smaller hd. when i load the cd. it says load, copy, boot, then Philips, and just stays there. after several seconds, the blue light flashes, then it seems to cycle through again, but completes past the logo. i am starting to think its not the hd, but something else causing this problem. any suggestions on what i might try? thanks for your help.

i have 2 of these dvr's. i swapped the working hd for the non-working hd and it worked. that tells me the problem is with the hd, and not something else in the box. maybe i don't have a good initialize or boot cd ? i am thinking about trying to copy the good hd to the non working hd with linux dd. anyone know if that should work?

I wouldn't say that there is no chance it would work, but I would say that there is probably a 95% chance it won't work. I work with Linux and other forms of Unix in my job. The problem is not with dd but it's that if your bad drive isn't working, using dd isn't going to magically fix what's wrong with it. The bad drive probably has too many bad areas on the disc. Hard drives do go bad over time and they can't be made to last forever while under constant use.

i agree about hard drives do wear out, and that is a possibility here. i also work with linux and unix in my job, for what its worth.. i wasn't sure if the drive was really bad or wore out, or if it just needed reloading. haven't really found much useful info on reloading a hd for use in the philips 3455h dvdr. someone said you need to partition a drive as fat32, then load the firmware via cd. tried it, didn't work for me. when i boot with linux cd and look at both drives (we will just call them good and bad), the good drive shows no partitions and the bad drive shows a fat32 partition. that makes me wonder if a fat32 partition will really work with this dvdr. anyway, i am trying to clone it with dd and will see what happens. i tried another smaller hd (40GB) that i know worked with linux, repartitioned it as fat32, and had same results. it might have some bad sectors, but it did boot with linux and was very useable. i figure if this doesn't work, i might try and format and partition the "bad" 160GB drive and see how it does with linux.. my guess is it will do fine.. hope it works as dvdr drive and i don't find out about the linux.. -)

well, so far so good. the dd copy worked. i am using the "bad" hd and watching stuff i recorded on the "good" hd, as well as tv. i also verified i could record and watch a new show also. finally, life is good.. not sure how long it will last, but it is good for now. am debating whether i should do the delete hdd option from the dvdr menu to blank it out. thanks for your help.

Hey vbdanl, have you been able to flash firmware to your 3455? I wonder if the CD was the problem the whole time.

No, I never did it successfully. I don't think my CD is bad, at least I can see the 4 files that are on it via from my linux pc. I still wonder if the HD should be just deleted and no formatting, or if it should really be formatted as fat32? do you have a philips 3455 recorder? the HD that worked did not show up as being formatted when viewing it with the gparted live CD. I formatted the bad drive as fat32, then tried to load the CD. i am a little apprehensive of trying something else now since they both are working.. i wouldn't mind trying something on a 40G HD I have, if you have suggestions.

When I first bought my 3455 I had trouble with it locking up all the time. I had to unplug it each time. So I was relieved when a firmware update came out. The first disc I burned was wrong and would not flash. Like you, I could see the files on it too/ It was just burned using the wrong mode so the recorder failed to recognize it. So I had to configure Imgburn to burn the disc the right way. I forget which burn mode I had to use, but it was spelled out pretty clearly in the firmware documentation.
BTW, the new firmware fixed the constant lockups. It can still lock up, but not every day like it used to. Now it is more like once or twice a year. So I encourage you to flash the newest firmware onto your 3455 recorder. And I believe that may have been the problem with installing the new hdd as well.
Lastly, I remember trying Gparted first to get the hdd ready and I cannot remember why, but it failed me. So I had to use a freeware Windows tool (SwissKnife) to format the hdd.
