Hello, as of right now I have been using a Philips DVP 5990/37 with a Western Digital 1TB external hard drive and that has been great.

But now my external hard drive is trash, dropped it 1 to many times and its done but i have everything backed up on dvds. anyway my question is this,
If i hook up an external dvd player/burner to the WDTV will it play the avi files from the data dvd's I have from there?
I know I still got the dvd player and can just put the dvds in and play them and thats what i have been doing but I'm just curios. lol I would like to get a wdtv and another external hard drive soon and was just wondering about that. That is not how i will be using it but was just wondering.

What exactly do you mean when you say "external dvd player/burner"? If you are asking can you do something like hook up your Philips player via USB to the WDTV and play discs on the WDTV via the Philips, no, that won't work. If you are asking if you can hook up an external DVD burner like would go into a PC, that MIGHT work. The original WDTV doesn't support this without using hacked firmware. The WDTV mini may not support that either. But the two WDTV Live models might support that. I have the old WDTV so I can't test that, but I think external DVD drives are supported for the WDTV Live models.

Yes, thats what im asking. The dvd player burner on my laptop stopped working so I got an external dvd player burner that I burn my avi files to as data dvd's. You know the ones that you would hook up to a pc or laptop by usb. Basically get the WDTV and hook up the external dvd player/burner I have to the WDTV by usb, put a dvd in, and will the WDTV detect the external dvd player/burner and dvd with the avi files on it and be able to play them. Like i said, this is not what I will be using it for but was just curios. Kind of like a worst case scenario in case I get another external hard drive and it craps out on me. Cus I would still have all those backed up dvd's and just hook up the external dvd player/burner and play the files from there.

Alterante scenario: share a DVD drive from a computer and have the WDTV access it via the network. -
