Hi there! I'm a newbie, so please humour me. This is probably a really dim question, but I'm hoping someone will take a moment to help me out. I've just bought the fourth season of Rescue Me on DVD. The back of the case lists subtitle options - closed captions for the hearing impaired (needed for a member of my family). The previous seasons listed subtitle options in the main menu, but this one does not. I've gone into setup options, but can't find the subtitles anywhere. I know Denis Leary doesn't have much time for disabled people (kidding, kinda) but I can't understand why the case says the DVDs are subtitled but aren't. Can anyone tell me if I'm doing something wrong? Are they in there, somewhere, and I just can't activate them?

Again, sorry if this is a truly lame query, but it's an important issue in our home.

    Thank you, Mrs Cee.

Have you tried something as simple as pressing the subtitle button on the remote ?

Usually you can select and change subtitles using a button on the DVD remote while the episode is playing, regardless of what is on the main DVD menu.

Do you think closed captions have to be turned on a different way? We've never experienced this problem before.
Only other suggestion I have is trying to play the DVD in your PC. A software player may show more options.

I have been communicating with the OP in the background. It appears that the disc in question has no subtitles, but does have closed captions. However the DVD recorder that she is using to play the disc is pretty idiosyncratic when it comes to displaying closed captions. I suspect that the simplest solution will be to purchase a cheap player that does support closed captions in a better manner. We did sort out the subtitle button issue - there isn't one. There is a button that brings up a menu during playback that allows for switching of subtitle and audio streams, and this seems to confirm that there are no subs on this disc.

Don't know if this would be of any help.

It is a site that apparently has srt subtitles for Rescue Me season 4 avail for downloading. Lots of players will play external srt subtitles if they have the same name as the movie.

I can confirm that this is the case for all the Rescue Me seasons on DVD (contain CC but no subtitles). I rip the discs and hardcode the captions, but I can see this being an issue for some DVD players.

Just to add to the fun, the source DVDs are PAL, but the English subs available seem to come from US (NTSC) HD TV sources.
