  1. This is in a newly built machine (actually built about 6 months ago but has happened since day1). Any dvd or cd (data, audio, video) shows up as an audio disc in windows. Using windows explorer the only thing that can be seen is 1 file called Track00.cda The same thing happens when I tried an external USB CD Drive.

If I put the windows xp disc in the drive and boot up it as if I'm installing windows it reads the disc properly. If I boot into safe mode all discs are read properly.

All of this tells me this is a windows problem. But what is the problem? I have looked at file associations, I have looked for the upper and lower filters in the registry and they did not exist. Device manager shows the device working properly. I deleted the drive and rebooted. Same result. I've googled this problem and found only a few people with the same problem but no solution found.

    Any ideas?

Looks like a corrupted file system driver.
I don't know the possible causes, nor the possible solutions.
I can only say that, on my Windows XP SP3 machine,
after installing the UDF 2.5 driver by Toshiba,
every CD or DVD is reported as "Unknown File System" ,

even though Windows Explorer sees the contents of the discs correctly.

  3. It's normal for Windows to show Trackxx.cda for audio CD"s, encrypted DVD's will show up as an error, use IsoBuster on disc's.
You can try uninstalling the drive in Device Manager.
