    i'm currently using quenc 0.72, anyone know any better?

  6. more efficient = better quality at a given bitrate

    I think, multiangle might require closed GOP , but for "normal" DVD's open is always better

    AFAIK, multiangle requires closed GOPS and fixed GOP length.
    But if you don't need closed GOPS, don't use them, as poisondeathray mentioned, open GOPS are more efficient.
    The reason behind it is, for open GOPS the first B-frame(s) can also use motion information from the previous GOP.
    For a closed GOP the first frame after the I-frame is normally a P-frame wich only uses motion information from the I-frame, so compression will be less.

    If you want to heavily edit the stream, also use closed GOPS, you can easily cut the stream at each I-frame.
